IALD India is one of the youngest branches of IALD. As a leader for developing the IALD organization in India, Amardeep M. Dugar developed and implemented a model for leadership and training in the lighting design field. He talked about how to systematically popularize lighting designs in emerging markets, based on his own experiences in India.
Dugar listed four important components for leadership development: individual, group, community, and program. In lighting design, “individual” means lighting designers, lecturers, and students, and “group” refers to the regions within a country and the branch offices. “Community” means opportunities to interact with people in different fields, such as architects and interior designers. “Programs” is the means to motivate these people, and is examined from viewpoints of environment, consciousness, activity, and effect.
According to Dugar, the “environment” of lighting design in India encompasses the current situation: only ~40 people nationwide can be called lighting designers in this second most populous country (1.3 billion), and the utilization of LED lighting is poor due to the undeveloped lighting market.
“Consciousness” means the overall Indian society’s attitude toward lighting design, which includes opinions such as lighting designs are not worth the expense, and there is no need for lighting designers to collaborate with architects and facility designers. Dugar said that leaders should be developed while taking into account this situation.
Dugar conducted 3-day workshops for students as an “activity.” Important ideas included: 1) building awareness of basic knowledge of lighting designs, 2) promptly adapting learned knowledge to the market, and 3) cutting costs. Workshops were conducted in eight major cities in India, based on these ideas. A total of around 1,500 people—not only students but also electric workers and program operators—were involved in this activity for popularizing lighting designs.
Dugar said the resulting “effect” of these activities was, among all thing, that the many people involved could acquire the leadership to popularize lighting designs, by experiencing processes such as decision making, communicating, and transferring, in addition to other effects such as more people becoming interested in lighting designs and increased media exposure.
