The history of IALD and the occupational capacity of lighting designers

Founded in 1969 and based in Chicago, Illinois, USA, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) is an internationally recognized organization dedicated solely to the concerns of independent, professional lighting designers. The IALD strives to set the global standard for lighting design excellence by promoting the advancement and recognition of professional lighting designers. Value Lighting designers are a tremendous resource of innovative, practical and economically viable lighting solutions. They understand the role of lighting in architectural and interior design and utilize their extensive experience and knowledge of lighting equipment and systems to enhance and strengthen design.


IALD (International Association of Lighting Designers) is the world’s largest association of professional lighting designers, based in Chicago. There are currently about 700 members throughout the world.
IALDJapan is the representative association of lighting designers in Japan that is affiliated to IALD. There are currently about 70 members, who are engaged in enlightening people and improving occupational capacity in lighting design through seminars and training sessions.

Achievements of IALD JAPAN

Branch activities by the 17 IALD members in Japan accelerated beginning in June 2009, through the format of IALD Tokyo Conference. This conference has been held 11 times in total so far, changing its name to Enlighten after it was suggested that Enlighten Asia in Japan 2013 should be held in March 2013. There are currently about 70 members in Japan.
